Gary came into this world on August 8, 1948 born to Norman and Dordeen Peterson. Gary arrived on the family farm to join his siblings Rick and Candy during an already busy harvest season, Gary’s favorite time of year. The family would soon add sisters Melody and Teresa and brother Brian. Growing up on the family farm, Gary was always busy working on cars and machines, building forts with his siblings and cousins and working in the fields around the homestead. Gary was always surrounded by family, friends and community who will remember his adventurous spirit, infectious smile and kind heart.
While Gary studied drafting at Spokane Community College, his entire life was full of learning and teaching. Gary was known for his ability to build or repair anything and was always volunteering to help others with their projects. Gary worked with Almira Farmer’s Warehouse from 1976 until his retirement in 2022 when he was celebrated for his decades of contribution to the company and the community. Throughout his life, Gary travelled the area teaching CPR and EMT courses to countless professionals. He was a dedicated member of the Almira Fire Department, a life-time member of the Almira Lions, a bus driver for the Almira school and once made a run for mayor of Almira!
Gary had 3 boys, Mike, Jeromy and Ben before his marriage to Julie in November 1984 when he welcomed her 3 children, Tara, Taunya and Ben, whom he raised as his own. Together they built a life full of love and laughter and added a 7th child, Kyle. Gary and Kyle were “attached at the hip” and remained best friends throughout Gary’s life. Gary’s work, his family and his community were the center of his life. Family and friends remember Gary as exceptionally hard working, a devoted partner, loving parent, loyal friend and an active member of the community. Other than his family, Gary’s proudest accomplishment was reaching the summit of Mt. Rainier.
Gary touched the lives of so many people throughout his life. His impact on the community will be remembered for years to come. Gary leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, work ethic and an unmatched friendly spirit. He is survived by wife Stephanie, children Mike, Jeromy, Ben (P), Tara, Taunya, Ben (D) and Kyle (KP), siblings Rick, Candy, Melody, Brian and Teresa as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and countless family members and friends. He is already deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
A memorial service will take place on March 22nd in Almira, details will be forthcoming. Friends and family are welcome to come and celebrate Gary’s legacy and share their memories. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or the Gary Peterson Memorial Scholarship Fund for vocational or community college students through the Almira Coulee Hartline High School.
Gary’s passing is a big loss to everyone who had the chance to know him. As we say goodbye, we hold on to the memories and the lasting impact he had on our lives. Rest in peace, Gary. Your spirit will stay with us forever.
