Longtime resident of Harrington, Emanuel “Mannie” Kinzel passed away in Odessa, WA on May 31st.
Mannie was born in Marcellus on August 8, 1921 to Fred A. and Katie Kinzel, immigrants from Warenburg, Russia. Mannie served in the Army during WWII until his commanding officer discovered he was profoundly hearing impaired. He lost his hearing at 9 yrs due to polio. He said he remembered his mother giving him scalding baths as a treatment for polio. At 16 yrs Mannie lost part of an index finger when he slipped and fell while chopping weeds around the family cistern.
Mannie met and married the love of his life, Mildred (Millie) Carnahan, in 1971 and gained a ready made family. Millie had two boys, Andy and Pat Carnahan, a daughter-in-law, Vicki Carnahan and grandson Drew Carnahan. Mannie had a few short years with Millie and said during that time he was very happy.
Mannie worked all of his working years for Odessa Union and was stationed at Mohler and Downs.
This last year Mannie had been feeling so good and was looking forward to having a 100th birthday. Sadly, he didn’t make it but he lived longer than any of his other siblings.
Mannie rarely laughed out loud but he had a great sense of humor. He liked to tell stories about growing up on the farm. He was a loyal, kindly, moral, and honest man who will be missed by his family.
Preceeding Mannie in death were his parents, Fred A and Katie Kinzel; wife Mildred Kinzel; sons Andy Carnahan and Pat Carnahan; sisters Anna Larmer, Lydia Kinzel, Polly Arlt, Laura Kendrick, Martha Ostgren, and Alice Moritz; and brothers Clarence ( Jim), Martin, and David Kinzel.
Surving family includes his daughter-in-law Vicki; grandson Drew; nieces JoAnn Wittenberg, Karen Leifker, Arlene LaVoy, and Kristine Moritz; nephews Bill Kinzel and Colby Moritz. There are also many great, great and great nieces, nephews and cousins.
In remembrance, donations may be made to the Harrington Opera House Society in Mannie’s name. He always supported community projects, activities, and celebrations, especially Fall Festival.
Uncle Mannie - we love you and will meet you on the other side. Safe journey.
Private graveside services will be held in the near future and a memorial service when it is safe to gather. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.strate-funeral.com for the Kinzel family.
