Walter C. Henkel, 88, of Bettendorf, IA passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Bickford Cottage. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 11am at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport; visitation will be from 10am until time of service. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials in Walter’s name may be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church or to The Center Food Pantry, Davenport, IA.
Walter was born on May 29, 1933 in Bennett, Iowa to Carl and Emma Henkel. He graduated from Tipton, Iowa High School. Following high school he joined the United States Army and served 18 months in Okinawa. When he returned home, Walter worked for the Rock Island Motor Transit for 22 years, then with Smith Transfer for 3 years, and retired from UPS after 22 years. He retired in February 2004 after driving for a total of 47 years with the Teamster Union.
On May 19, 1957 he was united in marriage to Joyce Sommers in Hooppole, IL. Walter was an active member at St. John’s United Methodist Church and the Davenport Moose Lodge #28. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, and dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce; his sister Anita Daufeldt of Tipton, IA; nephews Leon (Konne) Daufeldt, Phill Daufeldt, Konrad (Betty) Henkel, and Kent Henkel; and goddaughter Nancy Hanks Martin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Ernest and Albert.
