Visitation for Bud will be Monday, March 31, 2025, from 12 pm until 2 pm at The Runge Mortuary. Services to honor him will start with a Masonic service at 2, followed by the funeral service. His final resting place will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may go to the family to purchase a memorial bench at Grand Haven.
Virgil was born in St. Joseph, MO on February 10, 1930. He was the son of Homer and Sadie (Roberts) Dillon. He graduated from Davenport High School where he participated in the ROTC program. He married the love of his life, Dolores Hol on June 7, 1952, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on October 20, 2015.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a decorated tank commander and received the following medals: Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal and the Korea Defense Service Medal. He was commissioned to handmake parade swords for world leaders including: Haile Selassie (Ethiopia), the President of Ireland, and one for John F. Kennedy, which was not completed until after he passed, at which time was presented to First Lady, Jacqueline. The last one is on display at the U.S. 1ST Army Museum at the Rock Island Arsenal. Bud also was the founder of the Bettendorf Veteran’s Memorial in 2003, where he participated in numerous Memorial Day celebrations. His hobbies were going to the casino, puzzles, making wood furniture, but, most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren.
His memberships included: Bettendorf VFW #9128, Bettendorf American Legion Post #154, and the former Philbrook Masonic Lodge where he had been Past Master.
Bud worked 32 years as an Equipment Specialist for the Rock Island Arsenal prior to his retirement in 1987.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Debbie (Jeff) Louck, and Jon (Lisa) Dillon, all of the Quad Cities; grandchildren: Tara Dinneweth, Lisa Rasche Miguel, Jason Schadt, Jessica Gronewold, Bailey Reilly, Darren Dillon, great grandchildren: Devin and Bryce Rasche, Kilee Cortez, Brody and Addyson Miguel, Madison, Mason and Miles Rasche, Baxter and Parker Schadt, Landon and Adriana Gronewold, Fiona and Fitz Reilly, Carter and Mallory Dillon, great-great-grandchildren: Harrison and Lincoln Cortez and Isadore Rasche; special sister-in-law, Janet Hintz; sisters: Kathleen Mahoney and Katie Calmer and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Bud was preceded in death by daughter, Terri Dockery, grandson, Travis Rasche and siblings: Wava Mullen, Elaine Pierce and Chester Hintz.
