Thomas M. McGivern, 66, of Davenport, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Genesis East Medical Center. There will be a time of sharing with family and friends on Monday, September 9, 2013 from 4-7 pm at the Runge Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Assumption High School. Tom was born June 17, 1947 in Davenport, IA; the son of Gerald and Margaret (Kearney) McGivern. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in Vietnam.
After returning home from his military duty, Tom worked at Wonder Bread and was a pharmaceutical representative for a short time. He then began a career as a bartender, and is remembered by many for his Irish charm, and his ability to share a funny story or tell a great joke. Tom’s career spanned over thirty years at establishments including The Circle Tap, The Blackhawk Brewery, The Gallery and Pat McGuire’s. His entertaining personality and friendliness always made an evening at one of these establishments a memorable event. After retiring Tom filled his days wearing many hats at HyVee on Utica Ridge Road in Bettendorf.
Tom loved his Canadian fishing trips with long-time friends, was an avid sports fan, and was known to many as a trivia expert. In the words of one of his nieces “he treated friends like family, and family like friends”.
Those left to honor his memory include sisters: Sheila Engel, Davenport; Pat (Mark) Stender, Bonita, CA; brothers: Frank (Molly) McGivern, St. Paul, MN; Willie (Chris) McGivern, Davenport; Joe (Jodi) McGivern, LeClaire, IA; Jay McGivern, St. Paul, MN and Gene (Barb) McGivern, Egan, MN and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John and brothers-in-law, Gene Engel and Jack Hogan and niece Emma.
