Dr. Thomas H. McAninch of Davenport, IA passed on 21 August 2024 at the University of Iowa Hospital. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at Weerts Funeral Home. Memorial donations can be sent to King's Harvest or Quad Cities Animal Shelter.
Tom was born to Robert and Dorothy McAninch, 16 July 1949 in Wheeling, West Virginia. He graduated from Wheeling Park High School, where he played football and basketball, both a lifelong love. Tom married Mayumi Hashimoto McAninch in 2010, and remained so at his passing.
Tom received his B.A. and M.S. from Marshall University, Huntington, W. Virginia, his M.A. from University of Illinois, and his PhD. From Illinois State University in criminal justice. It was in this field that Tom became a renowned professor, expert lecturer and witness in legal cases, instructor, researcher, book reviewer, and author. Dr. Mack, as his students would call him, authored and published 4 books, co-authored and published 3 more books, and authored/co-authored more than 13 articles in various publications. Dr. Mack taught classes in criminal justice and sociology at Scott Community College up until his retirement last year.
Dr. Mack’s brilliant career extended beyond the classroom. He was passionate about his students, always ready to write a recommendation for a student and support them as they graduated and began their own careers. So much so, that it was normal for Dr. Mack and Mayumi to attend student’s weddings and other family events. Tom and Mayumi loved to travel, whether to Florida to enjoy Disney Land or Epcot Center, the Europe/British Isles, or far east. Tom was a huge football fan, Go Penn State! Go Steelers! He loved basketball and played golf until his health declined.
Tom is survived by his wife Mayumi, daughter Jennifer, and is preceded in death by his parents and brother.
