Sally L. Nelson, 86, of Davenport IA, died on Monday, March 17, 2025 at Silvercrest Garner Senior Living. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering in celebration of her life will take place on Monday, March 24th, 2025 at Weerts Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. with a time of remembrance beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sally will be laid to rest by her family at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport, IA. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Croix Hospice.
Sally was born on July 1, 1938 in Davenport, IA to parents Hazel (Blessing) and Jack Avis. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1956 and spent her career with Davenport Bank as a Key Punch Operator. On January 18, 1958, Sally married Roland E Nelson. They went on to celebrate 60 years together while welcoming 7 children into their lives.
Throughout her life, Sally loved going to church and had a fond place in her heart for the folks at Adventure Christian Church. She also enjoyed attending social events through CASI. Sally and Ron also loved hosting a yearly neighborhood block party in their back yard for the 46th
Street neighbors and children including tractor rides, apple bobbing and fishing for the prizes behind the orange tarp. Sally and Ron also enjoyed hosting Easter and having a big Easter Egg hunt for the grandchildren in their huge back yard..
In retirement Sally took up knitting, crocheting, needle point, reading and loved working puzzles. She was well known for her feisty attitude and her fuzzy sock collection.
Sally is survived by her children: Jayne Pfeifer, Denise Bland, Theresa Donnelly, Roland (Diane) Nelson, Michelle (Patrick) Matson, Leslie Nelson and Bradley (Nici) Nelson; 19 Grandchildren and 20 Great Grandchildren.
Sally was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roland, her son Ricky in infancy, her parents Hazel and Jack Avis, siblings Dick, Jack and Doris. Son-In Laws Roy Pfeifer and Dwight Bland.
The family would like to thank everyone at Silvercrest Senior Living and Memory Care for their years of great support and care for Sally and a special thank you to St. Croix Hospice for their tender and compassionate care for Sally. It meant a lot in a very trying time and we appreciate you so much!
