Funeral services for Robert O. Border Sr., 87, of Bettendorf will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport. The family will greet friends on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Interment will be at Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. Mr. Border passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus, Davenport. Cunnick-Collins Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements. Robert Owen Border was born on January 17, 1930 in Port Byron, IL, the son of Samuel and Leila (Preist) Border. Following high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy serving during the Korean Conflict aboard the U.S.S. Block Island Escort Carrier. On October 4, 1953, he married Martha Jane Stokes at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport. Following his military service, Bob earned his Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Bradley University. He worked for the Rock Island Arsenal as a mechanical engineer for 35 years until his retirement in 1995. Bob enjoyed being outdoors, whether it be fishing, camping, or traveling. Over the years, he enjoyed traveling with Martha to attend the U.S.S. Block Island Association reunions and national bowling tournaments. Among his other hobbies were playing cards and tinkering with cars. Most importantly, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren. Bob was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, VFW, and the American Bowling Congress. He is survived by his Wife: Martha J. Border of Bettendorf; Daughters: Robin (Dave) Johnson of Davenport, Bambi (Larry) Hout of Bettendorf; Son: Bob (Val) Border Jr. of Bettendorf; Brothers: Carl Border of Charleston, SC, Warren Border of Bettendorf; 5 Grandchildren: Emily Border of Davenport, Robert O. Border III of Bettendorf, Dalton Hout of Bettendorf, Stacey (Mike) Attwood of East Moline, IL, Mike (Lauren) Johnson of Moscow, TN; 5 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great-Grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Sam Border, Thelma LaBarge, Norman Border, and Lloyd Border. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s United Methodist Church, the Alzheimer’s Association, or to the American Heart Association.
