Raymond John Keating

Raymond Keating, 86, of Davenport, IA, died Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 at Senior Star, Davenport. Mass of Christian Burial and services will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, February 20th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 4097 18th Street, Bettendorf, IA where his family will greet friends from 9:30 am until time of service. Fr Ross Epping will officiate. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 299, Rock Island, IL. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting his family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN or the Bettendorf YMCA. Both memorials should be made in the memory of Raymond J. Keating.

Mr. Keating was born on July 30, 1931 in Wahpeton, ND to John and Caroline Keating. He married Jean Hintgen on January 23, 1954 in Wahpeton. During the Korean Conflict he served with the US Navy on the USS Point Cruz as a Line officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He earned Bachelor degrees in economics from St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN and industrial engineering from Seattle University, Seattle, WA. He was a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin as well as a member of the ASME. Upon his family’s move to the Quad Cities, he held various positions such as engineer and manager, eventually becoming owner, President and CEO of Kartridg Pak from 1961 until his retirement in 1992. All who knew him recognized his brilliant mind and love for history, science, engineering, farming and many other areas. He was a leader in every sense of the word- influencing the lives of his family, friends and community in countless ways.

In his earlier years, he was active in 4-H, playing trumpet in the high school and college band and in dance band. He played handball, basketball, tennis and volleyball- sports he continued to enjoy as an adult. A member of the YMCA since his youth, he subsequently served as President of the Davenport YMCA and later, the Scott County YMCA. He was prominent in the founding of the Bettendorf YMCA and the Bettendorf Library Foundation, of which he also served as President.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; daughters Kathleen (Alan) Moore of Champlin, MN, Colleen (Michael) Grady of Sherwood, Arkansas and Susan (Andrew) Bergeson of Geneseo, IL; sons Michael (Diane) Keating of Trafalgar, IN and Thomas Keating of Eldersburg, MD; Bonnie Keating of Belle Mead, NJ; grandchildren Jessica (Chris) Costa, Kelly Keating, Shannon Moore, Christopher (Rebecca) Moore, Rebecca (Shawn) Ryser, Aaron Grady, Colton Keating, Emma Keating and Garrett Keating; great-grandsons, Luke and Aidan Costa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother
