Marlene R. (Carpenter) Toney, 89 of Davenport passed away on January 29, 2022 in Decatur, GA. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2022 at Pentecostal Church of God, 1234 Ripley Street, Davenport. Visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Marlene came from a family of twenty one children. She was born on November 28, 1932 in East Moline, IL to Alvie and Atlee (Lyles) Hayslett. She attended United Township High School. She was married to Theodore Carpenter, they later divorced. She was united in marriage to Reverend Harold Toney on November 21, 1980 in Davenport. He preceded her in death in 1984. Marlene retired from the Rock Island School district. She was a faithful member of 2nd Baptist Church in Rock Island. She was a church mother affiliated in many churches and community organizations. She loved public speaking, traveling and was an excellent cook.
Survivors include her children, Richard Carpenter, David (Jackie) Carpenter, Minister Calvin (Kattie) Carpenter, Vernon Carpenter, Lillian Carpenter; a number of grandchildren, including Kedrick, Keandra, and Deja Carpenter whom she helped raise; several great grandchildren; sisters, Ruby Flowers, Evangelist Sharon Hayslett, Gloria (Danny) Weatherspoon, Marilyn (Bishop David L.) Walker, Frances Marshall; brothers, Walter (Dorothy) Hayslett, Anthony “Tony” Hayslett and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Theodore Carpenter Jr, Kenneth Ray Carpenter Sr; daughter, Donna Jean Carpenter and fourteen siblings.
