She was born November 14, 1911, in Middle Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Louisa (Schmieder) Dickel. She married Henry R. Schaefer on July 5, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, IA. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1990.
Marie was raised and educated in the German Amana Communal Society where she developed her strong work ethic, devout religious faith, and unselfish caring of others.
Marie, Henry and their young children moved to Davenport in 1939, where he started a small carpentry business. Marie did the business/office work while devoting her "spare" time to raising the family. The business ultimately grew into a well-known local construction firm, operating through three generations.
She was active in her church, a long time Sunday School teacher, a volunteer with the St. Luke's auxilliary, the Camp Fire Girls, and many local civic groups.
Private family services will be held in her memory. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Runge Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. A Memorial Service will be held on April 20, 1:00 p.m., at Ridgecrest Koning Center. Friends are invited.
Marie is survived by her children: Richard Schaefer of Madera, CA; Marilyn Schaefer of New York City; Carol (Kathy) Schaefer of Davenport; Suzan Schaefer (Ivan Dalen) of New York City; and Jack (Carolyn) Schaefer of Barrington, IL; a brother Willard (Mary Lou) Dickel of Middle Amana, IA; grandchildren: Lisa (Randall) Torrey; Sarah Wright (Steve Funk); Rick (Robin) Schaefer; Cathy (Craig) Callihan; Jacque (Mike) Lucero; Andrew (Christine) Schaefer; and Tom Schaefer; great grandchildren: Eliott, Annie, and Grant Schaefer; Kyle, Erin, and Konner Callihan; Taylor and Alexis Lucero; and Adelyn Schaefer; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters Johanna Kellenberger, Elizabeth Blechschmidt, and Wilma Schaefer.
Memorials may be sent to Ridgecrest Village, Davenport, the Amana Church Society, Amana, IA, or Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to all of the staff at Ridgecrest Village for the many wonderful years of care and service they provided. A special thanks to Nadine Nevill for all her special attention to Mom.
