John graduated from the University Of Iowa College Of Business in 1952 and was president of his class. While at the university he met the love of his life Mary Sue Orsborn. He was active in Phi Kappa Psi and enrolled in the R.O.T.C.. He was studying for his MBA when the Air Force called for duty and sent him to Germany as a lieutenant. He was proud to serve. After his service he came back to Davenport and joined his family business. He and Sue were married on March 6th, 1954. Together they raised five children and had a life full of wonderful adventures. They traveled the world together and made a home full of love and joy. John was successful in making the family’s business his own. He guided it through five generations of success. He remained active working until his death. He was a lifelong learner and persevered through difficult times. He never gave up on a person, idea, or even a bad book! He did give up on drinking in 1967 and was committed to his sobriety the rest of his life.
Sue preceded him in death on May 19th, 2022. Left to honor his memory are his five children: Frank (Mary Lou Burket) Howes, Mary Howes, Tom (Beth) Howes, Nancy (Joe) Coon, and Sarah (Dave) Adelson. In addition, he is also survived by his six grandchildren, John Davis, Steven (Larissa) Adelson, William Davis, Kevin (Maddy Coda) Adelson, Emily (Benjamin) Schmitt and Lauren (Cole Horton) Coon. He is also survived by great grandchild Camden Tumlin-Davis.
