Herbert George Berndt, 99 of Davenport went to his heavenly Father on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at home. Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Herbert was born September 10, 1917 in Toledo, OH to August and Dorothea (Stutzke) Berndt. He was united in marriage to Ruth Priest on February 23, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA, before being shipped overseas for two years. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Catoctin under Admiral Hewitt, stationed in the North Africa and Mediterranean Sea area. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 at US Naval Station, New Orleans, LA. Herbert and Ruth lived in Toledo, OH from 1945 to 1962 when they moved to Davenport, IA because his career transferred him to the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring after thirty years on June 29, 1973. In 1975 they bought Carlton House Apartments on Kimberly Road. He also worked as head of maintenance at Jumer’s Castle Lodge. After full retirement he spent many days and years helping his large family with all kinds of projects. His family was his life. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at 8th and Marquette Street. Survivors include his children: Gary (Debby), Gail (Gene) Beede and Gwen Schwindt (Jerry Dahl). He married his wife Janice (Ney-Strouth) on July 15, 1985 in Buffalo, WY. She survives him along with her three children: Angela Vignaroli, Jeff (Connie) Strouth, and Brenda (Howard) Kiel. Surviving also are twenty-six grandchildren: Nathan (Rachel) Berndt, Brad Berndt, Katie (Dustin) Wallace, Brian (Leah Schaufenbull) Berndt, Wade (Debbie) Rinderknecht, Eric (Dena) Rinderknecht, Joel (Heather) Rinderknecht, Luke (Desiree) Rinderknecht, Scott (Kim) Schwindt, David (Sara) Schwindt, Noel Kiel, Ryan Strouth, Kaitlin Kiel, Tyler Vignaroli, Amanda Vignaroli, Zachary Strouth, and Christopher Murphy, nineteen great grandchildren and his beloved pet, Pepper. In addition to his parents and first wife, Ruth, Herbert was preceded in death by three brothers, Art, Bill and Mike; two sisters, Eleanor and Esther; two grandchildren, Daniel and Kenyon.
