Gretchen Marie Johnston

Gretchen Marie Johnston, 88, born in Madison, Wisconsin and a longtime resident of Davenport, Iowa, passed away on March 8, 2022 in Tampa, Florida where she had resided since 2017. Gretchen always had a smile on her face and gladly went out of her way to support family and friends – often times making new friends with her caring and helpful demeanor. She had great fun work ethic and was proud to help so many children as a teacher’s aide at Eastern Avenue School for over 20 years. During her prime, Gretchen enjoyed playing cards, going to movies, making far too many Christmas cookies, visiting with friends and spending time with her family. She is preceded in death by her parents Louis & Loretta Burger, sister Susan Burger, first husband, Edwin “Hap” Johnston, her second husband, William Neverman; son; David Johnston; daughters, Susan Johnston. She is survived by her brother Peter Burger (Carol), son Steve Johnston; step-sons Carl Neverman (Karen) & Bob Neverman (Nicki); daughter-in-law Terri Del Coco (Rob); nieces & nephews Gus Buehler, Helena Buehler and Ed Buehler; grandchildren Michael Johnston, Justin Fletcher, Jason Fletcher, Sarah Johnston, Andrew Johnston, William Neverman, Amelia Neverman, Tyler Johnston, Brady Johnston and Will Johnston. A funeral service will be held 10:00am Friday (3/18) at Runge Mortuary & Crematory Davenport, IA. Gretchen will be buried at Memory Gardens in Iowa City between her two loving husbands, Hap and Bill.
