He was born May 17, 1943 to Leota and Robert “Red” Baker, in Davenport. Gary grew up on Harbor Road (now South Concord) on the Mississippi River. He was a part of the first graduating class at Davenport West High School in 1961.
Gary married Donna Brooking April 4, 1964 at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Davenport. He delivered wholesale groceries and products for several years before earning a degree from The Eastern Iowa Technical School, Davenport, in electrical maintenance. He worked at Alter Metal Recycling as an electrician before joining Alcoa in 1968, where he worked until 1999. He was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 1379. After retiring from Alcoa, Gary went on to work briefly for PCT, Davenport, until 2001. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved taking care of his family.
Gary is survived by his son, David (Tabatha) Baker, Bettendorf, Iowa; sisters Roberta Potter and Beverly Hogarty, both of Davenport; grandchildren Callista and Alexander, Bettendorf, and Christopher Anderson, Rock Island; and many nieces and nephews (and great nieces and nephews).
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Donna Baker, who passed away Jan. 11, 2023; his parents; and sister, Bonnie Baker, Davenport.
A memorial service for Gary and Donna Baker will be Saturday, April 1, 2023, at St. Mark Evangelical Church, 2363 West 3rd Street, Davenport, at 10:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the family.
