Floyd Perkins, 97, of Davenport, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, with his daughters by his side.
Visitation will be held 10am–11am Saturday, July 27, at Weerts Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11am. The "theme" is "You are My Sunshine" as that is a song Floyd sang throughout life. Wear a “You are My Sunshine” shirt if you have one, in honor of Floyd. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of your choice.
Floyd was born on April 15, 1927 the son of Floyd and Vivian (Long) Perkins in Davenport, Iowa. After serving in the Army Air Corps in Germany in WWII, Floyd married Evelyn Newendyke on December 3, 1948 in Fulton, Illinois. They began married life in DeWitt where their two daughters, Sue and Brenda, were born.
Floyd owned and operated a TV and appliance business in DeWitt, Iowa. After moving to Cedar Rapids, he was an electrical engineer in communication systems at Collins Radio. At Electrospace Systems in Richardson, Texas, he worked with top secret defense communication systems. Floyd enjoyed his career and had many interesting stories he loved to share with others.
Floyd was an avid ham radio operator. Floyd and Evelyn enjoyed years of square dancing. He was always singing, putting smiles on the faces of those around him. There were no strangers to Floyd and his wife Evelyn. In public places, they would see someone sad and sing “You are My Sunshine” to them. Floyd was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was humble, kind, thoughtful and generous. He always put family and others before himself.
Floyd will be lovingly remembered by his two daughters Sue (Dick) Kvach, Brenda (Mike) Gruskiewicz; five grandchildren Stephanie (Cliff) Ford, Ryan (Jessica) Kvach, Aaron (Emily) Forrester, Andrew (Wendy) Forrester, Stephanie Campbell; six great-grandchildren Audrey, Evelyn, Kiersten, Janner, Silas, Matilda; sister Debby (Gary) Nickerson. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn, parents, step-mother Sally (Techau) Perkins; sister Carol Lapka.
Floyd’s daughters, Sue and Brenda, would like to express their deep appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Senior Star and Genesis Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they have given to our father and mother and to us.
