Darlene E. Spies, 85, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at the Davenport Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 10:00 am at The Runge Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 pm at the mortuary. Burial will be in the Maysville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Maysville Fire Station or Make-A-Wish Foundation. Online condolences may be left at www.rungemortuary.com. Darlene was born August 6, 1928 in Dixon, IA, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Dohrmann) Rohwer. She was united in marriage to George Spies, Jr., on September 17, 1949 in Davenport; he preceded her in death on April 18, 2013. She was a loving homemaker who enjoyed quilting, baking and gardening. She also bowled on the Maysville Ladies Bowling League. She had a strong love for her family and was so proud of each and every one of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family. Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Cathy Smeltzer, Donahue, IA; sons: Mickey (Jodi) Spies, New Liberty, IA; Tommy (Denise) Spies, Buffalo, IA; Barry (Denise) Spies, Oconomowoc, WI; Harry (Melinda) Spies, Maysville, IA; Randy (Janelle) Spies, Muscatine and Scotty (Jody) Spies, Maysville, IA; sixteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; brothers, Harlan Rohwer, Davenport and Albert Rohwer, Jr., Dixon, IA; sister, Luella (Ken) Ziemer, Taylor Ridge, IL; many nieces and nephews and her best friend forever, Jane Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters: Ruth Klinkrodt and Alberta Kelting.
