Charles (Charlie) M. Smith Sr., 65, of Davenport died at his home on Wednesday January 29th. He was born March 25th, 1948 in Louisville KY to Frank G. Smith Jr and Dorothy Meyer Smith. He married his wife, Janice (Myers) Smith, on June 28th 1969. He earned his bachelor's degree in Philosophy from Washington and Lee University and his Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal for 31 years. In honor of his service, he received the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service ward, the highest civilian service award. In his retirement, he wrote and published the book War for Profit, and wrote many articles for the website Truthout. He enjoyed reading philosophy, listening to the Grateful Dead, and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, of Davenport. Brother, Frank G. Smith and wife Pat of Aiken SC. Sister, Francie Cuffney and husband Tom of Raleigh, NC. Son, Charles M. Smith Jr. and wife Bridget of Arlington Heights IL. Daughter, Meg Smith of Chicago IL. Daughter Sarah Smith and partner Tyler Ostergaard of Nashville TN, and two wonderful grandchildren Alex and Carrie of Arlington Heights IL.
The family will hold a private service for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
