Memorial services will be held Monday, October 26th at 1:00 P.M. in the Runge Chapel. Visitation will be from Noon to 1 P.M. at The Runge Mortuary & Crematory. The family suggests memorial contributions to the hospice of the donor’s choice.
Albert was born in Davenport on December 9th, 1927 to Martin and Mida (Galbraith) Runge and graduated from Davenport High School. He served in the Army Air Corp’s 11th Airborne Division from 1946 to 1947. He graduated from St. Louis College of Mortuary Science in 1949 becoming the third generation in the family business – The Runge Mortuary. In 1950 he rejoined the Army Air Corp for one year.
Upon the death of his father in 1964 he became President of the funeral home, oversaw the 1969 construction of their new facilities and added the crematory in 1984. He retired from the funeral home in 1997.
In 1949 he married Norine “Polly” Wampler in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He married Silvia Neumann on August 21, 1987 in Davenport.
He is survived by his wife, Silvia, Bend, OR; daughter, Gretchen (Jeff) Biehl, Davenport; son, John (Mona) Runge, Tuscaloosa, AL; granddaughter, Victoria Runge, Fort Worth, TX.; step-daughter, Veronika (Larry Smith) Tracy-Smith, San Clemente, CA ; step-son, Scott Tracy, Houston, TX; twin sisters, Joyce (J.P.) Johnston, Rock Island and Joan Chell, Kansas City, KS; sister-in-law, Constance Runge, Davenport and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his daughter, Aleece Runge, Portland, OR; his parents; and brothers, Henry C. Runge Sr., Davenport and William Runge, Bettendorf.
His current and former memberships included: Life Member of American Legion Post #26, Life Member of the 11th Airborne Association, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Trinity Lodge #208 AF & AM, Davenport Scottish Rite (33rd degree), KAABA Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters, Davenport Club, Crow Valley Country Club, Outing Club, Arsenal Country Club and many funeral service organizations including Cremation Association of North America, Iowa Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association.
