After his family settled in Dartmouth, Bill eventually joined the family business, Bell Busses, during which time he met his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Harrison), by whom he is survived. He also worked for some time with Richardson Securities as a stock broker. He then returned to the family business and he and brother, Robert began and operated Bell Enterprises, a rental property company. Later he operated Lancaster Park Apartments with his children until his retirement. Bill was very active in his community, always fund raising and contributing to such things as the Dartmouth School Board, International Sundowners, Kiwanis Club (of which he was an honoured 50 year member), Lake City Industries, the Bridge Commission, the first Canada Summer Games Committee, and the Liberal Association. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Dartmouth Curling Club, Austenville Owls Club, and the Brightwood Golf and Country Club.
Bill is survived by his brother, Robert (Helen); sister, Alison Wilson (Glenn); sister-in-law, Frances Geddes; son, Laurie (Karen Allison); daughter, Maggie (Gordon Oakey); daughter-in-law, Janet; granddaughter, Sarah; as well as many nieces and nephews and their families.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday November 7, 2012 from 2-4pm in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. Funeral service will be at 1pm Thursday November 8, 2012 from St. James United Church. Reception to follow at Brightwood Golf and Country Club.
