The family of Philip Grantham Baker is saddened by his passing, following a brief illness, on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at the Dartmouth General Hospital with his wife and son by his side.
Phil was born in Ottawa, Ontario, on December 15, 1940, and spent his earliest years in Kilmar, Quebec, before moving to Montreal in 1951. He attended Bishop’s College School from 1953 to 1958 and studied Economics and History at Acadia University from 1958 to 1963. Phil was an advertising executive at Flygt Canada in Montreal and Canadian Kenworth in Ottawa. He was later employed as a membership representative for the Halifax Board of Trade.
Phil married Patricia Cleveland in May 1966 and their son Bryce was born in March 1970. Following their divorce in 1978, Phil moved to Ottawa with Bryce. Relocating to Nova Scotia in 1989, he first settled in Yarmouth and then Dartmouth. In August 1992, Phil married Elizabeth Anne Black of Halifax and they took up residence together in Dartmouth.
Phil had many interests including music, stamp collecting, sailing and automobiles, all of which he enjoyed from a young age. He spent his vacations at family cottages on Big Rideau Lake in Ontario and Sebim Beach in Nova Scotia. Phil was also a 20-year member of Probus.
A beloved husband, father, brother and uncle, Phil’s congenial spirit and helpful generosity were appreciated by family, friends and neighbours. An engaging story teller, his sense of humour will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Phil was predeceased by his parents, the former Gwenyth Philipps of Barrington, Nova Scotia (1950), and E. Grantham Baker of Westmount, Quebec (1987), as well as by his brother-in-law Paul Gauthier (2020).
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Elizabeth Black; son Bryce (Amanda) of Schomberg, Ontario; sister Barbara Gauthier, Liverpool; niece Deana (Rob) Buller and nephew Mike (Kae) Gauthier, as well as several great nieces and nephews. He will be missed by stepbrothers Patrick and Michael Laverty, many members of the Baker clan as well as Elizabeth’s sisters, Valerie (Ernst) Grundke and family, and Heather Black.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the team at Dartmouth General Hospital for their care and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Phil, donations may be made to the Dartmouth General Hospital, 325 Pleasant Street, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 4G8.
