Nancy Marie Carr, age 70, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on January 20,2024, after a hard fought battle with breast cancer. She was born on November 23, 1953, making the last car ferry across the harbor to Halifax for the day. She is survived by her mother, Catherine Rainer; husband, Bruce; sons, Peter (Charlene), Robert (Dawn); grandchildren, Liam, Zora and Benjamin with a new granddaughter due in the near future; and brother, Michael (Elaine). She was predeceased by her father, Vernon Rainer.
Nancy lived her entire life in Dartmouth. She attended North Woodside School and Prince Arthur Junior High School where she was awarded the Latin prize upon graduation. She then attended Prince Andrew High School. While there she was selected for the Cross Canada Cultural Exchange Program which allowed her to spend two weeks in Alberta. Upon graduation she was presented with the award for General Excellence in Mathematics. She was also the recipient of the Canadian Coast Guard Scholarship. Nancy then entered the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1975. Upon graduation she worked in retail for a short period before starting a career at Dartmouth General Hospital that lasted more than 30 years. Upon retirement she was then asked to return in a casual relief capacity which she did for an other eight years.
Nancy and Bruce met while at Prince Andrew. They began dating during their time at Dalhousie and were married in 1976. In 1979 they moved to their home on Lyngby Avenue where she remained until her passing.
Nancy can best be described as having a wonderful personality. Although shy by nature she made friends easily. She enjoyed being with others and never liked being alone. She was kind, thoughtful and caring. She had a ready smile and was a great listener to which many who knew her well would attest. She was also a maid or matron of honour six times.
Nancy's interests were many. She enjoyed sitting on her couch overlooking our backyard park. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed crypto-quotes and crosswords. She loved to travel especially if golf was included. Although not involved in sports when she was younger she became a multi-disciplined athlete after her marriage. She took up running and was an age group winner in the Bluenose 5km. Although small in stature, as a member of the Dartmouth Curling Club she threw big weight as a second stone. Her biggest passion of all was golf. She was totally immersed in the game and was recognized for her competitiveness on the course. She was heavily involved in helping to run the Ladies Division at the Brightwood Goff and Country Club where she also served a year as Ladies President. She was especially proud of being presented with the Joan MacLean Award for perseverance after her cancer diagnosis.
Nancy was a stalwart member of St. Alban's Church. At one time or an other she served in virtually every official capacity for the parish. Her last position was as treasurer from which she had to resign after her illness returned.
At this time we would like to thank family, friends and healthcare professionals for their overwhelming compassion and support during this difficult time. It was a great comfort to Nancy to know how much everyone cared about her.
