Barteaux, Marjorie Clare - Age 89, passed peacefully at Lewis Hall, Parkland at the Lakes, Dartmouth NS, on Monday, March 6, 2017. Born in Sydney NS on May 30, 1927, she was the daughter of H. Britt and Winifred (Simpson) Mitchell. In 1934 her family relocated to Dartmouth, next door to the boy who would become the love of her life. After Greenvale School (then Dartmouth's high school), she earned her diploma in music from Dalhousie University, and in 1951 graduated as an R.N. from Victoria General School of Nursing. She practiced at the V.G. Hospital, Mass General in Boston, and Dartmouth Medical Centre.
In later years she continued volunteer work with the I.W.K Women’s Auxiliary, the Dartmouth board of the V.O.N. and the I.O.D.E (Maid Marion chapter). She remained active with the alumni and archives of the V.G.H. School of Nursing. In 1955 she married that boy across the way: Don Barteaux. They began married life in Yarmouth, returning to Crichton Avenue in 1957, where they raised their children and lived the rest of their lives together beyond a Diamond Jubilee. As members of St. James United, she and Don were founding members of the church's Carillon Handbell Choir, with whom they toured and performed for more than 20 years.
An avid documentarian, Marj assembled scrapbooks and albums from girlhood onward.
She pursued geneology, nursing, church and other local history, and served as photographer for three generations of family. Marj was a "fair-weather" sailor and camper, and enjoyed sharing many seasons at Milford House with life-long friends. Marjorie was predeceased by son Bruce (4 years old), and brothers Ross (in childhood) and Kenneth. She is survived by husband Donald, son David R. (Pam Murphy), daughter Anne E. Cochkanoff and grandchildren Emma Murphy-Barteaux, Hannah and Nick Cochkanoff and niece Deborah Markle. We dearly miss this clever, creative woman, and will remember a good friend, and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Special thanks to staff at Alderney Lane, Lewis Hall, for the care and kindness everyone showed Mom during her stay. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, at 12 pm on Friday, March 10 2017, with reception following. Family flowers only.
