WHITBY, Joseph Edward - 88, of Dartmouth, died August 3, 2021 at home. Born in Lucknow, Ontario, he was the son of the late Rose M. (Whitby) Knight. He is survived by his son Lawrence and grandson Justin. He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Roy) Whitby and son, Edward Joseph. After dropping out of school part way through grade 10, Joe joined the Royal Canadian Navy on 19 March 1951. After doing new entry training at HMCS Cornwallis, he went on leave and returned to HMCS La Hulloise for seamanship training. He served on the following ships, Huron, Crusader, Trinity, Athabaskan, St. Croix, St. Laurent, Terra Nova, Stadacona, Magnificent, Bonaventure, New Liskeard, Portage. He commissioned HMCS Algonquin as Coxswain. He served two years on HS50 helicopter squadron as a sonar operator. He underwent training for the ASROC system at US Naval Training Base Great Lakes Illinois. He done two trips to The Netherlands for factory training on new sonar computer system. Joe retired from the RCN in 1976 and immediately went to work at the Naval Armament Depot in the Underwater Weapons Shop. He later moved to what was known as the Pink Place and worked as a co-ordinator. After moving to the new Building D-200 he became a Ship's Co-Ordinator. Joe retired for a second time. In 1993. Cremation has taken place. There will be no viewing. Burial will be in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.
