Born in Belfast, N.I. to George and Mary (Atkinson) Cree. John came to Canada in 1929 as an indentured boy destined to a farm in Alberta. The story of his adventures in western Canada and his travels across Canada during the depression years in an attempt to return to Ireland was published in the Imperial Oil magazine. His story is also on file at the Pier 21 Immigration Museum in Halifax. John retired in Halifax and enjoyed life to the full, known for his wonderful singing voice and boisterous nature.
John is survived by daughter Elizabeth (Frank) Dunham, grandson Scott (Karen) McAllister, stepdaughters Elizabeth (Bruce) Short, Sylvia (Bill) Boutilier, granddaughters Elizabeth (David) Adamson, Victoria, Roberta and Rebecca Dunham, Sandra and Patricia McAllister, step grandchildren Tessa, Molly and Katie Short, Donna Lind, Shelly Lacroix, Kari Jackson-Duplessis, great grandchildren Kelly and Dale Adamson, Mariza, Francis, Simone and Claudia Gaspar, Maddie and Simon Dunham-Carter, Jamie, Johnathan, Chris, Shane and Randy McAllister, Dominique Richard and Devon McAllister, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great great grandchildren in Canada and Ireland. John was predeceased by his first wife Agnes Simpson and second wife Christine Gracie, daughter Joan McAllister, son Andrew, sisters May Howie and Grace Moore, brothers Andrew, Samuel, William, Thomas, Robert and granddaughter Kathy McAllister.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday, April 11, 2015 from A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbourview Haven, Lunenburg, NS.
