Passed away peacefully at her home in Dartmouth on Monday February 10, 2020.
Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Richard (Dick), her much-loved sons, Scott (Beverley Cassidy), Mark, and Joel (Carol Burns), and her devoted grandchildren, James, David, Kate and John.
She will be deeply missed by her brother, Robert Devanney (Eunice), sister, Debbie Roberts (Barry), sister-in-law, Frances Weldon and many nephews and nieces. Joan also leaves behind many friends.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Elsie Devanney (née Rennie) her nephew, Robert Devanney, brothers-in-law, George Weldon and James Harrison and sister-in-law, Catherine Harrison.
Born at home in Dartmouth on June 2, 1935, Joan lived in the city for her early years and moved with her family to Brookside as a teenager. She attended Queen Elizabeth High School and later secretarial college. It was while working at Registry of Deeds that Joan met Dick. Despite being called Doug (her previous boyfriend’s name) by Joan’s dad Robert for the majority of their courtship, Dick and Joan married in October of 1956.
Joan loved to curl and was a long-time member of the Dartmouth Curling Club. She had a deep interest in and enthusiasm for politics. Joan supported Dick in his political career at the municipal and provincial level and was a committed member of and dedicated volunteer for the Progressive Conservative (and later, Conservative) party for many years. In addition, Joan was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where she sang in the choir.
Above all, Joan was devoted to her family. Her children and grandchildren were her deepest pride and joy. Among her happiest times were the summers spent at the family cottage in beautiful Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia with Dick and their children, where they enjoyed many visits from family and friends. In later years, she cherished the annual August visit to Glen Margaret of her four grandchildren.
She will be forever in our hearts.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday February 18, 2020 at 11am in St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 9 Veterans Ave, Dartmouth, NS. A lunch will follow at noon in the church basement. All friends and family are invited to attend.
