MACRAE (Nicholson), Jean Margaret - Of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2022. Born in Halifax on June 15, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Rev. John A. Nicholson and Ethel (Bawdick) Nicholson. She will be fondly remembered by her children: Dr. Judith MacRae, Ottawa, twin Patricia Crowell (Dr. Richard), Halifax, Jeffrey (Celina), Calgary, Holly MacRae (Stephen Dodge), Dartmouth, and James (Phyllis), Edmonton. Grandchildren, Christopher Ritcey (Neera), Jeffrey Crowell, Martin MacRae (Jennifer), Jennifer Dunbar (Jeff), Kristen Tobin Dunbar (Ryan), Andrea and Leah (Michael) MacRae, Jaclyn (Liam) and Julia (Ryan) Dodge, and Robbie (Brandi) MacRae. Great grandchildren, Haydn and Evan Ritcey, Harmony MacRae and Taylor MacRae. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Alvin MacRae, son John, sisters Ruth, Beth, and Marjorie, and nephew Wayne. Jean spent her childhood in both Nova Scotia and PEI. She graduated from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, where she met her future husband, Alvin, at age 14. She then followed him to Halifax where he completed his medical degree at Dalhousie University. Jean worked for the University during those years. Jean and Alvin married in a double wedding in June of 1951 with her close sister Ruth and brother-in-law, Harry Power. Ruth and Jean were inseparable and the two couples enjoyed many vacations together over the years. Jean and Alvin moved to Dartmouth upon his graduation where they raised six children together. Alvin set up his solo medical practice in Downtown Dartmouth, where he was a beloved family physician for over 60 years. Jean and Alvin were happily married for 64 years until his passing in 2015. Jean devoted herself to her family, and loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She was an excellent cook, a wonderful gardener, avid reader and book collector, loved poetry, genealogy, and politics. She enjoyed summers at the family cottage in Cavendish, PEI for over 80 years, which is down the lane from Anne of Green Gables homestead. She loved everything about PEI, including Cavendish Beach, New Glasgow lobster suppers, berry picking, and cherished all of L.M. Montgomery's books. She enjoyed many trips to Bermuda, Barbados, England, and Scotland. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, her love of fashion, shopping, and being a wonderful mother and homemaker. The family would like to thank Sue, Stephanie, and Leon for their devotion over the years. The funeral service will be held on June 17, 2023 at 2pm in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home.
