Jim MacDougall, aged 85, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away on August 8, 2024, at the Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Jim was the son of John and Betty (Edwards) MacDougall.
Jim is survived by his three children: Derrick of New Brunswick, Craig (Derrith) of Prince Edward Island, and Shauna (Bruce) of Minnesota. He was a devoted grandfather to his seven cherished grandchildren: Kyla, Meghan, Lauren, Kierra, Keegan, Ceilidh, and Breckin. Jim is also survived by his brothers, George, Joe, and Greg. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and soulmate, Shirley (Martin), his parents, and his brothers, Jack and Cameron.
Jim dedicated his career to education, working as a consultant for the Department of Education in Nova Scotia. His commitment to promoting health and physical activity among students stemmed from his years as a high school teacher in Ontario and Nova Scotia. After retiring, Jim and Shirley fully embraced their retirement years, traveling extensively across Canada to visit family and friends and enjoying many car trips to their winter home in Florida. These journeys were filled with joy, exploration, and the creation of lasting memories.
Jim was known for his genuine warmth and love for engaging in conversations with everyone he met. Over the years, he developed many friendships across Nova Scotia, Ontario and Florida and places in between. His final home was at Parkland Estates in Dartmouth where he continued to forge meaningful connections with both residents and staff alike.
He took immense pride in his grandchildren’s activities and achievements, including cheering at graduations from his beloved StFX University. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan. Jim’s enthusiasm for their activities was unwavering and deeply appreciated.
A Funeral Mass will be held on August 30 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Clement’s Church, 16 Gaston Road, Dartmouth, NS. Prior to the service, Jim’s family will receive relatives and friends from 12:30-1:30 at the Parish Hall (basement). Immediately following the service, a reception will take place at the Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in Jim's memory.
Jim will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his passion for education, his strong sense of friendship and his zest for life. His legacy of love and commitment will continue to inspire all who knew him.
