Smith, Harold H. - Our father, Harold Henry Smith (81) passed away peacefully after a brief but courageous battle with lymphoma early Thursday, January 22, 2015. Dad was born in Halifax to the late Aubrey and Alma (Day) Smith. His youth was spent in Woodside where his passion for baseball led him to many victories for the Woodside Arrows. Dad spent his early years in the 1960’s working for Imperial Oil as an independent agent. It was during this time that he and mom (the late Margaret Rowan Smith) began raising their family in Port Wallace. After leaving the oil business, Dad began a career in truck driving, retiring from Quality Concrete (Dartmouth Ready Mix) after 23 years of service. During this time he and Mom moved the family to Upper Lakeville where they built our family home on Lake Charlotte to enjoy the country life. It was here that he spent many hours of enjoyment doing various things like snowmobiling, Saturday night cards, stock car races and in later years watching his grandchildren in their various endeavours. As their children grew older and left the nest, our parents moved back to Dartmouth where they lived until our mother’s illness brought them back to the Eastern Shore, making their home at Una Drive, Oyster Pond, with their daughter Margo and her family. Dad is survived by his daughter Margo (Robert) Humphrey, Oyster Pond, sons Hal, Lake Echo, Paul (Angela) Lake Echo, Robin Chilliwack. B.C., Christopher (Colette), Dartmouth; 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; brother Melvin, sister Brenda lee Wallace, sister-in-law Marilyn Smith; several nieces and nephews. Harold was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret E. Smith (Rowan) and his brother Bill (William) Smith. Special thanks to Gail Osborne, Dad’s companion for the past several years, along with her family and especially during these past months. We would also like to extend a special thank you to the VON nurses, Palliative Care Team and We Care staff who came in to take care of our dad during his final weeks. Dad’s wish to remain home was granted. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 26 from 2-4 and 6-8 at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St. Dartmouth. Funeral Service will be held in the same location on Thursday, January 29 at 11 am, reception to follow. Interment will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Dartmouth. Rev. David Puxley officiating. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lake Major Rd., Dartmouth, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Red Cross or a charity of your choice.
