Gerard was a dedicated and hard worker. He started his career in grocery at Lloyd’s in Eastern Passage where he grew up before working at Sobeys for 35 years. When he wasn’t working he played baseball, crib, bowled and even wrote some poetry. Gerard’s favorite thing to do was watch hockey as he was a long time loyal New York Rangers Fan and even collected NYR memorabilia. Gerard would help out anyone who needed it and he never backed away from a challenge so he touched the lives of many people.
Gerard is survived by his wife Nancy (Taylor), his parents Charlie & Mona (Miller) Oakey; brother Billy Oakey; brother John & Linda (Gray) Oakey; nephew Liam Oakey; nieces Kaitlyn & Bryana Oakey; stepson Chris Pettigrew with whom he had a special relationship and considered his son & his wife Natasha (Ramey); his grandchildren that he adored and was so proud of- Matthew, Hunter, Lucas, Noelle, Heidi, Jarett and Austin. We can’t forget the fur-babies, Abbie, Jenger, and Cocoa.
Thank you to everyone who came by to visit Gerard in hospital, it really meant a lot to him. Special thanks to Dr Erin Morgan, his Oncologist and to the nursing staff in Palliative Care at the DGH who took excellent care of Gerard and were an amazing comfort to the family.
