Dorothy was born on March 11, 1921 in Middle Sackville, N.B., to Rev. E. Robert MacWilliam and Ida (Crozier) MacWilliam. Joined by her brother, Gordon, they lived in various places in the Maritimes and Maine. She graduated from Liverpool High School in 1939, and attended Acadia University, receiving a B.A. in 1942, and a B.Ed in 1943. She taught high school in Oxford, and at Halifax West. Most of her teaching career was spent at Dartmouth High School. She was admired and respected by students and colleagues, retiring in 1982.
Dorothy was a member of Bethel United Baptist Church where she was the organist and choir director for many years, as well as a deacon, and served on many committees.
Dorothy enjoyed reading, music, crafts, and traveling. She treasured her family and many friends, and especially loved young people, for whom she was a calm and supportive presence. Her kind heart and easy, happy laugh disguised energy and strength of character appreciated by those who knew her. She was blessed to maintain a sharp mind and quick wit, and her deep faith sustained her through life's challenges.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; brother, Gordon MacWilliam; husband, Emerson Howard; son, Robert Howard; and daughter -in-law, Bonnie Howard.
She is survived by her son, John Howard; daughter, Helen (Chuck) Gordon; and grandsons, Alexander Gordon and Cameron Gordon.
Special thanks to the staff of The Birches Nursing Home and the Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care she received and the kindness shown to her family.
A private funeral service will be held at Bethel United Church, with interment to be held in the spring in Oxford.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth. Donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to Bethel United Baptist Church.
