It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of Chester Earl Smith in the early morning hours on October 2, 2019. Born on October 26, 1936 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia Chester was the son of the late Wellesley and Jessie (Teal) Smith, Broad Cove NS.
Chester grew up in Broad Cove and Halifax. He was a graduate of Queen Elizabeth High School. He started work in the retail business at an early age with Goldbergs on Barrington Street. He enjoyed a long successful career for over 50 years, culminating in the ownership of “Chester’s Mens and Boys Wear” in MicMac Mall for many years.
Chester was very active in the community and was involved with Emmanuel Anglican Church, Dartmouth, Dartmouth Curling Club, Austenville Owls Club and Dartmouth East Rotary. He was proud to have been a charter member of the Rotary Club and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for his service.
Chester was an avid curler for over 50 years and looked forward to attending the Monctonian and Quebec International Bonspiels each year. He won the Nova Scotia Senior Mixed Curling Championship in 1990.
Chester was a man who was well known within the Dartmouth community and a friend to all. In his retirement Chester built a beautiful home in Broad Cove and again immersed himself in the community, volunteering with United Communities Fire Department, St. Marks Anglican Church and Bridgewater Curling Club.
He is survived by Mary (MacLean) Smith, his much loved wife for 59 years; his children Paul (Mary Elizabeth), Susan; grandchildren Matthew (Jenna), Katherine and granddog “Joey”.
