Charles Alton Murphy, 79, of Dartmouth, died peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on March 2, 2013. Charlie was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick on December 11, 1933, the son of a late William Joseph Murphy and Mary Edith (Morris) Murphy. He lived in many places as a child including Fredericton, Parrsboro, and New Glasgow. As a teenager, he attended St. John Academy in New Glasgow and then went to St. Francis Xavier University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from St. Mary's University in 1960. Charlie then taught for two years at Saint Patrick’s High School before returning to St. Francis Xavier for his Master of Arts in Teaching English. He valued education greatly, and taught English for most of his career at Dartmouth High School and Prince Andrew High School in Dartmouth. Charlie had an abiding and lifelong interest in most sports but especially baseball, as an athlete, coach and fan. He was an avid reader on many subjects and thoroughly enjoyed philosophical debate. For many years he was happiest when at his cottage at Caribou Island, Pictou County and watching baseball. He is survived by his wife Claire (Landry), daughters Alanna (Don MacLellan), Shauna (Daniel Roache) and son Jim (Jennifer Feron). Charlie is survived by his six grandchildren Maggie MacLellan, Katie MacLellan, Mark Roache, Tommy Roache, Maura Murphy and Ella Murphy. Charlie is survived by his only sister Kathleen Mullane (Cyril), Calgary. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. As well as his parents, Charlie was predeceased by a brother Morris, in infancy and a grandson , Matthew MacLellan, also in infancy. The family would like to thank the staff of the Dartmouth General Hospital and especially the nurses of 3 East for the excellent care given to Charlie during his final weeks. In keeping with Charlie’s wishes a private service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of A. L. Mattatall’s Funeral Home in Dartmouth.
