It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty Sweet of Dartmouth. Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at Dartmouth General Hospital on September 29, 2020. Born in Port Dufferin on July 13, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna Smiley. She was predeceased by her husband, Val. He was the love of her life and taken far too soon; may they be together now and for the rest of eternity. At a young age, she moved to Halifax to live with her aunt Mabel. In 1960, she graduated from the Victoria General Hospital as a registered nurse, obtained her Bachelor of Nursing from Dalhousie University in 1986 and then retired after many years of being a nursing supervisor. In retirement, Betty enjoyed being active in many social circles, including the Red Hat Society, IODE, Christian Women, and frequent lunch outings with her VG nursing friends. She loved to travel with friends and family, and her independence produced many solo adventures to Florida in the winter. She passionately followed her grandchildren’s sporting events and would often be seen at the rink in Cole Harbour Place. She will be fondly remembered for the many lives she touched with her kind heart and selflessness. She is predeceased by Barbara (Paul), and leaves behind her sons, Rufus (Patricia), Greg (Michele); siblings, Phyllis (Wendell), Murray (Carolyn); grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa), Jonathan (Simone), Ryan, Rebecca (David), Jamie (Emily) and six great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation on Monday, October 5th from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held by invitation only with Rev. Mary Lynne Whyte officiating. In memoriam, donations may be made to the Woodlawn United Church.
