Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Milton H. and Inez E. (Lawrence) Dean, he was a 1939 graduate of New Bedford High School and a lifelong resident of the city. Mr. Dean was employed as a Salesman with Sears and Roebuck for 37 years and later delivered newspapers for the Standard Times.
A United States Navy Veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Boise until his honorable discharge in 1945. Mr. Dean was a 32nd Degree and Master Mason. He was a member of the Star in the East Lodge AF & AM in New Bedford. He was an avid traveler, beach walker, bird watching and was active in the protection of Osprey in the Westport River. Lawrence was also a member of the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in New Bedford.
Mr. Dean’s family would like to thank the staff of Hathaway Manor, for the compassionate and loving way they cared for Lawrence during his time at their home. He considered you all family.
Mr. Dean is survived by his daughter Laurie Bettencourt and her life partner Joseph G. Costa of Dartmouth; a granddaughter Kayla Bettencourt; a great grandson Joseph Bettencourt; and a longtime friend Lisa Perry. Mr. Dean was also the brother of the late William Dean.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 10AM in the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT DARTMOUTH 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 5 to 8PM with a Masonic Service starting at 8pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his honor may be made to Hathaway Manor Activities Fund, 863 Hathaway Rd., New Bedford, MA 02740 or the South Coast Osprey Project, c/o Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, 1280 Horseneck Road, Westport, MA 02790 .
