Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Edward B. and Doris (LeClair) DaCosta, he was a lifelong resident of the city.
He was employed as a truck driver for Homlyke Bakery in New Bedford, retiring in 1992. An active member of St. Martins Episcopal Church, he and his wife were the first husband and wife Senior Wardens at the church. He was also a former vestry member and sexton.
A talented woodworker and animal lover, his favorite times spent were outdoors enjoying nature. His family meant everything to him. “Papa John” was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren grow. Mr. Costa was well known for his sense of humor and for being the “life of the party.” He will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
He was the father of Michael Costa and his wife Joanne of Acushnet, Joanne Pratt and her husband Don of Rochester, Barbara Pereira and her husband Amandio of Dartmouth, and the late David A. and Brian A. Costa; brother of Theresa Fisher of Newark, DE, Francis DaCosta of Claymont, DE, and the late Mary Duffy, Robert DaCosta, and Edward DaCosta; his sister-in-law Ellen Furtado of Acushnet; dear lifelong friend of the late Larry Denault; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
His Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 9:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth, followed by a Funeral Service at 10:00AM in St. Martins Episcopal Church, 136 Rivet St., New Bedford. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Flowers are appreciated or contributions in his honor may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. Burial in Acushnet Cemetery.
