Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Ernesto Silva and Ilda (Peixoto) Silva of New Bedford he was a lifelong city resident.
Ernie attended New Bedford Vocational High School and worked many years as a scalloper for various fishing vessels. He was well known down on the water front in the city. In his spare time, he enjoyed kayaking, spending time outdoors and being with his friends.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Lina DaSilva and her husband Gilly of New Bedford; two brothers, Nelson Silva and his wife Sarah of New Bedford and Carlos C. Silva of New Bedford; a sister-in-law, Shawna Silva of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 9:30 am from WARING-SULLIVAN at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 am in Our Lady of Mt.
