Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Jose and Mary (Rebello) Fernandes.
Donald was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1954 and received his Associates Degree from Bryant College, class of 1957. He served in the Army and worked as an Adjuster for Hemmingway Transitional Company, Merchants National Bank and was an Engineer for the Massachusetts Highway Department for 29 years until retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Band Club, Mount Carmel Seniors, Saint Hedwig Seniors, Retired State, County and Municipal Employees Association, and the Portuguese American Civic League. Donald loved his family and he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his loving son, Joseph E. Fernandes and his wife Kathy of Downingtown, PA; three grandchildren, David Fernandes, Gregory Fernandes, and Sarah Fernandes, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Arnold Fernandes, Richard Fernandes and Ronald Fernandes.
His funeral will be held on Friday, October 16, 2020 at the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME AT DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd. Dartmouth. Visitation will be held prior from 8:30am to 10:00am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Rivet St., New Bedford. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Little Sisters of the Poor, Holy Family Home, 5300 Chester Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19143.
