Arthur (Taby) D. Mello, 91, passed away Monday, July 29, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Quiteria (Freitas) De Mello with whom he shared 69 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel and Alexandrina Mello, he was a resident of New Bedford and worked as a DPW foreman for the city until his retirement to Naples, Florida where he resided for 20 years.
Mr. Mello was a United States Navy veteran who served on the USS Hornet and survived its sinking during World War II.
In addition to his wife he leaves behind a daughter, Sheila Azevedo and her husband Manuel of Dartmouth: one sister, Grace Rose of Boston; two grandchildren, Wendy Azevedo and Kelley DeMello; two great-grandchildren, Alec DeMello and Harris DeMello; and several nieces. He was the brother of the late Manuel (Pete) Mello and Laura Campos.
His funeral service will be private. In lieu of memorial contributions, take someone you love out to dinner and enjoy your time together. During your meal, please find a moment to toast Arthur's life.
Arrangements are in the care of the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Dartmouth.
