Born during the Great Depression, Red was a man who embodied the spirit of the "greatest generation". The son of immigrants, one of his first jobs was as a farm laborer. Through hard work and determination, he founded a company called Cosbro Inc. with his brothers; building many beautiful homes throughout the greater New Bedford area. A talented carpenter with an eye for detail and space utilization, he drafted the plans for all of the homes they built; many with unique characteristics.
While Antone took great pride in the homes he built, his biggest source of pride and joy was his wife Carmen (Micky) and the family they built together. Known by all as true soul-mates, Red and Micky showed a youthful passion towards each other and an unmatched level of love and devotion. After raising their family and retiring, they enjoyed walking, dancing, swimming, travelling in their RV and spending summers camping on The Cape. In his youth, Red was well known on the shuffle board circuit as a local champ; one of the best on the East Coast, winning numerous competitions.
A true gentleman and loyal family man, Red was always there to care for his family - both to help and spoil his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He leaves daughters Carmen Morrissette of Westport and Sari Fonseca of Acushnet and sons Antone Costa Jr. of Foxboro and Joseph Costa of Acushnet. He is also survived by a sister, Alice DoCarmo of Fairhaven and a brother, Manuel Costa of New Bedford; as well as, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Mary (Freitas) Santos, Joseph Costa, and James Costa. Antone will be sorely missed but remembered by his family as a devoted man, with a beautiful spirit, who will continue to inspire us through his incredible example of a life well lived.
His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11am in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Fairlawn, 180 Washington St., Fairhaven. Visitation will be 10-11am prior to the service. Burial will be in Acushnet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
