It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas James McGuire announce that on September 3, 2022, he went home to the Lord at the age of 85. Tom is survived by Grace, his beloved wife of almost 64 years, his seven sons and daughters and their spouses, 26 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and brother Paul.
Tom was born March 20, 1937, the fourth son of Murty and Gladys McGuire in Buffalo, NY. Just prior to his senior year at Canisius High School he met the love of his life, Grace Schumacher. He married Grace on November 27, 1958. Together they would raise Michael, Mark, Maureen (Decker), Mary Ann (Fleming), Tom, Teresa (Fiorina) and Peggy (Regan) starting in Buffalo, followed by Indianapolis, Cleveland and finally in Yorktown Heights. In Yorktown, Tom built lifelong friendships in the neighborhood and at St. Patrick’s that he cherished greatly.
Tom’s career spanned 40 years, all at Union Carbide, starting in the mailroom in 1954 until his retirement from the Law Department in 1994. After retiring at the young age of 57, he jokingly maintained that he was looking for other career opportunities, but his focus had shifted to the Outreach Program at St. Patrick’s and most of all his grandchildren. He attended their Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, Graduations at all levels, sporting events, recitals, plays, weddings and more. Tom’s devotion to his faith and family was remarkable.
In 2007, Tom made “the brilliant decision” to move to the Liberty in Newtown, CT. A wonderful community, this proved to be the ideal home that would allow him and Grace to continue to focus on their ever-expanding family. It would also be the place where Tom would live his final day on Earth, just as he would have wanted it to be.
