After a valiant and years long fight against multiple myeloma, Nabeel Sabbagh passed away peacefully on the night of May 30, 2024. His dignity persisted until the very end, when he decided to join his mother, Malaky Sabbagh, who passed away in November of last year.
Nabeel, son of Rajah and Malaky Sabbagh, was born in Beisan, Palestine on November 13, 1947. Soon after his birth, he and his family moved to Hamat, Lebanon, where he spent his childhood playing in the mountain village. He came to America in 1956 with his parents and three siblings (Amin, Naz, and Jehad), where his family grew even larger with two more siblings (Nellie and Sam) born soon after.
Nabeel is survived by his three children and their partners: Nabeel and Robyn Sabbagh, Molly and Anthony Alberghini, and Olivia Sabbagh and Kevin Coyle. He leaves behind two beautiful granddaughters who adoringly call him Jiddu. The impact he had on his granddaughters will remain evident in years to come, for no one is too young to forget a love so large.
He is predeceased by his mother and father Malaky and Rajah Sabbagh and his nephew, Ryan Sabbagh.
Nabeel’s energy has always been larger than life, and with this energy he traveled the world, formed friendships in many places, and still made the time to cook with his mother and for his family. Food was a big part of his life, whether that led to long car rides to try out new restaurants or cooking up a storm in the kitchen; Nabeel knew how much a good meal with good people meant. He would confidently boast about being the second best cook in the family, after his mother of course.
From a young age, Nabeel was a savvy businessman and entrepreneur. He started his first company at age 18 and worked hard his entire life, even later on when he was “retired.” We are not entirely sure how our father did it all, but he did. He lived his life unashamedly and to its fullest extent. Nabeel's relentless efforts not only allowed him to see the world but also positioned him as a well-respected man about town. He loved life and loved collecting sentimental and antique objects. There is not an item in his home that does not have its own origin story. He was our go-to guy for everything, from paper clips to financial guidance and life advice.
In addition to his role as a devoted family man, Nabeel was a true friend. We have been privileged to experience an outpouring of love and support from those fortunate to have crossed paths with him.
Nabeel embodied the meaning of loyalty, always available and ready to provide unwavering support to all. Our hearts ache for ourselves, but they also go out to the many friends our father loved and lived his best life with. As a man who only needed a few hours of sleep each night, he spent much of his time with friends laughing themselves to tears and making memories that will last beyond his lifetime. The space he leaves behind is a big one that may never quite be filled. Overtime, however, we hope to fill the space by honoring our father and living life as candidly as he did.
As we, his children, work through our grief and loss, we remain on our toes as we sift through his life’s collections; still finding notes and letters addressed and proving to us that our full of life father was also full of love. A family man and true friend through and through, Nabeel’s absence is felt by all those he leaves behind. Our father taught us something new every day, and we are blessed to carry on the wisdom he passed down to us. We hope that the memories of our father help comfort you in these sad days ahead. Remember Nabeel as he was; full of life, full of love, and forever 39.
