Mary Gertrude (Gert) Robinson Halas, age 91, of Danbury, CT passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, October 1, 2015. Beloved wife of the late Paul C. Halas Sr., she was a lifelong resident of Danbury Connecticut.
Gert was born on October 23, 1923 to John and Minnie (Miller) Robinson. She attended St. Peter’s School and graduated in 1941 from Danbury High School. Gert went on to attend Framingham State College in Framingham, MA where she studied Home Economics. Upon returning to Danbury, she worked at Danbury Savings Bank until marrying Paul in 1949.
The loving mother of ten children; Paul, Patricia, Elizabeth, Maureen, Barbara, Geraldine, Margaret, Michael and the late Richard and Kathleen Halas, she was also the cherished grandmother of 19 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Gert was an active member of St. Peter’s Church of Danbury where she was involved in the Women’s Guild and Mothers’ Circle of St. Peter’s. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and received the St. Anne’s Medal given by Bishop Curtis for her leadership. Her dedication to children continued as Gert returned to work as a librarian in the Danbury Elementary Schools.
Upon retirement she became involved in AARP where she planned and led trips for her chapter. In her free time she continued to care for her children and grandchildren and spent many hours cooking homemade meals and delicious treats. She also enjoyed her pets and was an avid bird lover.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Monday, Oct. 5, 2015 at St. Peter Church, Danbury, with the Rev. Gregg Mecca, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. Friends will be received from 2pm-5pm on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
