Maria Judite Freitas of Danbury, CT died peacefully, at Danbury Hospital on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. Maria was born June 3, 1945, in Coimbra, Portugal, the daughter of the late Manuela and Manuel de Melo Freitas. In 1968 Maria moved to Danbury where she worked for Barden Corp for over 40 years and Grolier's for over 20 years.
Maria was active in the Portuguese community and served as first woman President for a period of time at Portuguese Cultural Centers. Maria enjoyed traveling, reading, attending classes at WestConn and spending time with family and friends.
Maria is survived by two sisters: Maria Teresa de Sa de Melo e Freitas, Maria Joao de Sa de Melo e Freitas de Almeida as well as several nieces and nephews of Portugal and her beloved godchild Michelle Carvalho of Danbury, Ct. all that had the pleasure of meeting and knowing Maria will sadly miss her.
A Christian Burial Service will be celebrated at 10am on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at St Peter Cemetery Mausoleum, 71 Lake Ave Ext., Danbury with the Rev. Jose Britto-Martins, Pastor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Danbury, officiating. All friends are welcome to attend.
