Joe was born September 4, 1940 in Atouguia da Baleia, Portugal. He served in the Portuguese Army during the Angola War where he was wounded and returned to Portugal and civilian life. He worked in Germany for one year before coming to the U.S. in 1967.
Joe was predeceased by his parents João and Maria Rosa Salvador and his brother Francisco Salvador.
Joe is survived by his sister Julia Salvador (Chagas) and his brother John Salvador (Helena). He is also survived by his nephews Manuel José Chagas and Douglas Salvador and his nieces Maria Dolores Oliveira and Susan Salvador along with grandnephews and grandnieces.
In 1967 Joe married Teresa Arriaga who predeceased him in 1990. In 1981 Joe, in partnership with his brother Francisco, opened a custom picture frame shop called “Frank and Joe Gallery” on East 78th St. in Manhattan. It was a successful business for 33 years, however, they had to close shop when it was time to retire in 2014.
He loved to play with his grandnephews and grandnieces and he loved children and was a “big kid at heart”.
In 2002 Joe took Maria Valente in matrimony. They were married at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Danbury where Maria worked and Joe became a familiar face as well.
Joe is survived by his wife of 20 years, Maria and his step-son Jason Valente. He is also survived by many sister and brother-in-laws and many cousins in Portugal. He will be missed.
