John was born in Manhattan May 16, 1931, the son of the late James and Rose (Johnson) Carway. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School, and Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1957 and was among the first bi-lingual clergy sent to Puerto Rico to study the Spanish language in an effort to better understand people living in inner city communities. He remained a priest for 13 years leaving the priesthood in 1970.
John and Carmen were married in 1970 and during this time he assisted Father Louis Gigante in his run for Congress that year. John later began his employment with the State of New York, Department of Substance Abuse Services, where he worked for 24 years. During this time, he attended Saint John’s University in Queens, NY, where he received his PhD in Psychology. Following his employment with the State of New York, John began a career with VIP Community Services in the Bronx. He retired as Vice President of VIP at age 72.
In his retirement, John and Carmen spent the winter months in Puerto Rico. They also enjoyed travelling to Europe. John spent a lot of time reading, studying the Bible and the life of Christ.
In addition to his wife, Carmen, John is survived by his two sons and daughter. Carlos Carway and his wife, Lauren, of Granite Springs, NY. Marcos Carway, and his wife, Lisa, of Mahopac, NY and his daughter, Donna Carway of South Fallsburg, New York. John is also survived by his three grandchildren, Evan, Rhys, and Dylan, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, February 11th at Saint Peter’s Church in Danbury. John requested a green burial in the Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
