Gloria was a kind, gentle, progressive and intelligent woman who continually learned and was open minded to diverse ideas.She was well traveled and had countless friends. Her wisdom, wit and peacefulness guided and comforted her family and friends throughout her life. She was loved and respected by all who knew her.
Gloria was born on November 11, 1926, to William and Alice (Keating) Burke in Astoria, NY. She graduated from the College of New Rochelle and received her Master’s Degree from Columbia University.
While she spent her early years in Mount Vernon, NY, and several of her later years in Boynton Beach, FL, Gloria’s heart belonged to Danbury. She was elected to two terms on the Danbury Common Counsel, which was a forward-thinking pursuit for a woman in the 1960’s. She was active in Danbury’s business community, operating several family businesses, including The Keating Taxi Company, Danbury Finance Company and Putnam Realty. She also spent many years as a teacher at Danbury High School, Immaculate High School and St. Gregory the Great School. She was a Member of the Danbury Garden Club and a Friend of the Danbury Library.
Gloria was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband, Bob Putnam. She is survived by her children, Mary Alice, Joe and Bob Putnam, Bob’s wife Lori Steele, and by her treasured grandchildren, Sydney, Savannah, Avery, Joseph, and William Putnam, and Jessica, Lexi and Sam Steele.
A Mass in memory of Gloria will be celebrated on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Gregory the Great Church, 85 Great Plain Rd., Danbury, CT. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gloria’s memory to the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association who provided loving care during her final days. RVNAHealth.org.
