David Giles Taylor of New Fairfield passed away peacefully on Friday January 22, 2016 at the age of 65. He was born at Danbury Hospital on December 8, 1950 to the late Gladys Irene “Rene” and Earl A. Taylor of Bethel, CT.
David graduated from Bethel High School in 1968 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. David proudly served two tours in Vietnam as a Specialist 5th Class.
After being honorably discharged, David returned to Bethel and started his own business, David Taylor Mason Contractor, which he operated until his passing.
David proudly designed and built a memorial at New Fairfield Volunteer Company “A” Firehouse honoring those who perished during the September 11th attacks. He was an honorary member and past president of the fire company as well. He was also involved with the Vietnam Traveling Wall exhibit at the Danbury War Memorial, as well as an active member of both the New Fairfield Lions Club and Boy Scouts of America.
David met his future wife of 40 years, Betty Greer, on a blind date in 1974 and they were married on March 21, 1975. They welcomed their first child, Joshua, on January 11, 1980 and their second, Erika, on June 29, 1984.
David is survived by his wife, Betty, son and daughter-in-law Josh and Suzanne Taylor, daughter Erika Taylor, grandchildren Nicole and Robert Taylor, brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Laura Taylor, nephew and his wife Bruce and Lisa Taylor, niece and her husband Sara and Andrew Ellis, great niece and nephews Zachary and Emily Taylor and Michael and Sean Ellis, mother-in-law Helen Greer, cousins Lorraine Furino and Diane Trawick, and best friend (since 2nd grade) James and Maryann Wild.
David enjoyed everything outdoors. He was an avid sportsman who could be found out in any season hunting and fishing. Even in the past few years, David was able to find his way into the woods and kill “3 birds with one stone.”
David and his family always appreciated everyone’s visits and kind words and especially his weekly lunches and trips with Jim.
Friends will be received from 4pm-8pm on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016 at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury. A Prayer service will be conducted in the funeral home at 7:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to either the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund; 1235 South Clark Street, Suite 910; Arlington, VA 22202 or Wounded Warrior Project 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300; Jacksonville, Florida 32256.
