Dave was raised on the family dairy farm in Fairport, New York, where he and his wife, Margaret Melarkey Hull, lived for 48 years and raised five children.
At age 16, Dave enrolled at Syracuse University as a forestry student, leaving to join the Army Air Corps after Pearl Harbor. After the war, he returned to Fairport and joined the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Major after 20 years.
Besides helping on the family farm, he began his career at the American Can Company at the Fairport plant. While working at “the Can,” he also attended the University of Rochester and completed his Bachelor of Science degree.
In1971, he and his family moved to Danbury when he was transferred to Canco Greenwich headquarters, retiring from the international division in 1985.
Building on his skills honed during the family croquet games on the farm, Dave played competitive croquet as a member of the Greenwich Croquet Club, traveling with Margaret to courts around the country and collecting many trophies at the Championship level. Besides croquet, he brought his competitive spirit to pool, Scrabble, golf, and cards.
Predeceased by his wife after 71 years of marriage, he is survived by his children: Michelle Norell of Virginia, Patti Phillips of Florida, Timothy Hull of Idaho, Betsy Dunphy of Maine, and Peter Hull of Colorado. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchilden.
