Barbara Knapp Swanson, age 91, of Southbury, passed into eternal rest on Friday, May 15, 2015 at her home at Pomperaug Woods. She was the wife of the late George E. Swanson of Weston and mother of the late Robert E. Swanson and Cynthia Louise Swanson. She was born in Danbury on February 8, 1924, a daughter to the late Charles and Louise (Pitman) Knapp.
Barbara was a graduate of Danbury High School Class of 1942, New Haven State College and Columbia University Graduate School. She was a devoted elementary school teacher in the Weston and Westport School Systems and a librarian at New Haven State College. She loved teaching and always said that her students brought her much joy and satisfaction.
After retirement she moved from her long time home in Weston to Heritage Village in Southbury in 2001, and then to Pomperaug Woods in 2007 where she enjoyed serving on the Library and Food Committees, volunteering in the Country Store and playing bridge. Barbara was an avid reader and her passions were knitting, needlepoint, and sewing. She created many beautiful and unique sweaters, throws and needlepoint creations.
Besides her parents, husband and children, Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Helen Clark.
She is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Charleen Swanson of Newtown, her nieces, Gloria Sudora of Southbury , Wendy Swanson of Wallingford and Kirsten Fitzgerald of Canton, MA and her nephews, Willliam Heering and John Heering of Bethel, Jon Swanson of Charleston, MA and Bruce Clark of Lake Luzerne, NY.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury on Tuesday May 26, 2015 from 12:30 - 1:30pm. A graveside service will immediately follow at Wooster Cemetery.
